Once a place people overlooked, due to its rough patches, it's now a must-see thanks to some serious love and investment from pioneers. Now, Otrobanda is transformed and totally visit worthy when you’re visiting the island and even if you’re living here. The transformation is something that everyone should witness.
History
Otrobanda, along with Punda, belongs to the historical heart of Willemstad and plays a significant role in the history of the city's neighborhoods on the island. Linked to Punda since 1886 by the Queen Emma Bridge and the Queen Juliana Bridge since 1974, it's a place with roots. Back in the 17th century, when Punda was all filled up, people started settling in Otrobanda. However, this expansion happened in a chaotic and unstructured manner, leading to much unrest and crime. Initially, it was mainly labourers and undesirables from Punda who moved there. Over the years, various artists and volunteers have worked to brighten up the neighbourhood, and we must say, they’re doing a fantastic job!
Otrobanda through the years
In recent years, through investments and renovations, Otrobanda's been getting a facelift. The neighborhood has managed to retain its historical charm while injecting new energy and life It’s become a hotspot where locals, tourists, and students come together to appreciate the culture, art & restaurants. Tours are given through Otrobanda (Like our very own Tour with Kurt that you can find on our experience page), allowing many tourists to come into contact with the vibrancy of the neighborhood.
